Ledged & Braced Batten Gate by Marcus Whitehead, Joiner/Builder.

Getting a gate to fit an opening is one thing, but getting the hardware to operate in the way it is intended is another.

Take a look at this video. A good joiner will always make sure that the sneck slides smoothly into its keeper, so that the gate closes itself when given a gentle push.

Cost Effective Joinery & Maintenance

This garden gate is a classic design. It’s a batten gate, ledged and braced. The gate is made of eight, six-feet-long, 4″x ¾” battens, held together by two ledges, top & bottom, and braced diagonally.

This historic design is the blueprint for many doors today, often with the edition of an extra ledge, and usually with the ledges morticed into tenons on two vertical stiles, but the basic principle is the same: the ledges hold the battens in place, and the brace transfers the weight from the side with the latch to the bottom hinge.

The gate posts are 75mmx75mm (3″x3″) fencing posts, each fixed with three M12, 140mm through-bolts, so there’s 70mm of fixing in the walls. On one side, the previous post had been let into the render of the house wall. This channel needed widening to allow the 3″x3″ post in, as we were replacing a hardwood 3″x3″ post which had been planed, unlike our rough sawn timber.

All the timbers used by Marcus Whitehead Property Services come from responsibly managed resources which have active replantation programmes (70% FSC Certified) to replenish the harvested timber. By adding the most environmentally advanced and effective preservative treatment the service life of the gate is vastly increased, ensuring we are making the most out of the timber.

It is the tanalising process that gives the wood it greenish hue. This fades of the course of a few seasons into an even more attractive silver-grey. All the screws used are stainless steel, so there will be no discolouration (unlike that which can be seen running down the render from the boiler outlet!)

Shop Fitting Preston, Blackburn & Clitheroe. The second of two jobs done for Bloom Hearing Specialists, this time in Lancaster.

The site survey revealed a rotten window sill, with rot spreading to the foot of the stiles. Equally, the pilasters were in need of replacement. Note was taken of the style to allow for a faithful reproduction.

To avoid the expense of replacing the whole window, the rotten sill was removed, with the intention of splicing an new sill in its position, with further three further splices to the bottom of the stiles. Upon removing the rotten sill the cause of the problem was revealed. The original sill was still there, and whilst the shop fascia had been improved, the rotten wood had not been removed, eventually causing the rot we were here to replace. Therefore it would be necessary to fit a new sill to match the remaining portion.

The pilasters were reproduced and the stiles were spliced with new wood. The stonework beneath the window was repointed.

Commercial Client Focus #4: Ascot Studios Gallery.

With our appreciation of the need for clinical care & precision, and absolute cleanliness in high class environments, we have been the perfect partner to Ascot Studios, controlling the installation of several large pieces of highly valuable artwork to collectors in executive commercial environments, as well as luxury residences across the North West.

We have also produced 3D walkthrough demonstrations of proposed works within the gallery environment.

Ascot Studios is a highly successful contemporary art gallery based in the beautiful & historic village of Ribchester, in the heart of the Ribble Valley.

A change of colour scheme for the Blackburn & Lancaster branches of Bloom Hearing Specialists brought to attention the fact that some of the wooden shop fronts were showing the signs of age and had started to rot at the lower levels. This is usually a case of splash-back of rain from the pavement..

At the Blackburn branch, it was found that the window sill was not rotten, but the paneling beneath required replacement, as well as the feet of the two pilasters, one either side.

The style and moulding was faithfully reproduced with new materials, and the new work was given a coat of wood primer to provide protection before the contract painters came to redecorate the whole lot.

October & November 2012 saw the first ever awards for members of the Lancashire Safe Trader Scheme. These awards are Lancashire County Council’s way of celebrating all of the great work that the traders do as members of the Safe Trader Scheme.

Traders were asked to apply for 5 different award categories and the winners were chosen based on both their application forms and customer feedback. The awards categories were; customer service, supporting the local economy, protecting vulnerable people, eco-friendly business practices and an overall trader of the year.

Additionally Trader Excellence certificates were awarded to 175 traders based throughout Lancashire to recognise their commitment and contribution to the scheme.

Time-lapse video: Retro-fitting a traditional oak roof truss.

The property had already been re-rooved and slated, with the new ridge beam passing a few inches above the post seating of the old ridge. A cleat had been fixed to the side of the post to extend its height to meet the ridge. In addition to this, the two rafters had been supported midway along their length with brickwork piers built onto the main, six-metre-long, twelve-by-nine, beam. All in all an ugly sight. The task, then, was to remove the original truss post & rafters without disturbing the existing tonnes of slated roof…

Commercial Client Focus #3: Bee Mill Garage.

We have been responsible for running repairs on Bee Mill Garage in Ribchester, Preston, Lancashire  since 2008.

The work we have undertaken has varied in scale:

• Repaint the pair of historic Edwardian bi-folding timber doors that open onto Preston Road.
• Replace the timber that bears the load of the enormous sliding doors at the entrance to the garage.
• Repair and re-cover a metre-wide, felted valley-gutter over 20 metres, where the garage abuts the adjoining mill.
