The brickwork in this fire recess was badly blackened, yet the home owner wanted to stay faithful to the original material, so the recess was boarded out, and lined with brick slips, which were pointed up as normal brickwork. This created the illusion of the original brick recess.

The original stone hearth had long since been removed, but the boarded floor covering was carefully cut back and replaced with sand stone. A mock lintol was fixed to the face of the chimney breast before the whole thing was plastered and painted.
